Artist's Description

Illustration of the stages of bone development in a human fetus. On the left at 3 months gestation, the future bone is mostly hyaline cartilage with a primary ossification centre arising in the middle (future diaphysis). At 5 months (second and third images) this centre has developed into spongy bone and the two ends of the growing bone show wide bands of epiphyseal growth plates consisting of chondrocytes. At 6 months, the shaft of the bone is supported by a collar of bone (coloured orange). Both ends (metaphysis and epiphysis) consist of cartilage that will continue to grow and expand longitudinally into postnatal life. Haematoxylin-eosin stain. From Schaffer J (1922) Lehrbuch der Histologie und Histogenese, Engelmann, Leipzig, Plates 6,7,8.
