Description
Blood centrifuge. Blood samples in sealed test tubes being loaded into a centrifuge. This blood has been taken from the umbilical cord of a preg- nant woman, and may be used to treat leukaemia and other disorders of the immune system. Centrifuges separate out the blood cells from the fluid (serum) by spinning the sample at a high speed. Umbilical cord blood is useful because it contains a high number of stem cells which divide to form healthy new cells. This blood is also less likely to be rejected by the new host. The blood is collected from the cord immediately after the mother gives birth. Photographed at the Milan Cord Blood Bank, Italy.
