Artist's Description

Blanchard's first Channel-crossing balloon, 1785. Illustration of the balloon used in the 7 January 1785 cross-Channel flight by French balloonist Jean Pierre Blanchard (1753-1809). Blanchard's balloon had 'oars' which were intended to be used to 'row', though they were ineffective. Blanchard crossed the Channel by balloon in 1785, and held many national records for first balloon flights.
