Birds rescued from oil spill. These birds are drying under an infrared lamp after being cleaned of oil. Oil can poison birds as they attempt to groom themselves. It also damages their plumage, reducing its insulating effect and causing them to die of cold. These birds were contaminated by the Sea Empress spill off the coast of Milford Haven, Wales, in February 1996, which released about 70,000 tonnes of crude oil. They were rescued by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA).
