Betel nut chewing. Artworks showing the preparation of betel nuts for chewing. Betel nuts, from the betel nut palm tree (Arecha catechu), are chewed for their intoxicating effect which is similar to alcohol. Watercolour by the British artist Olivia Fanny Tonge (1858-1949). This artwork is from a collection of watercolours drawn by Tonge in the period 1908 to 1913, during two visits to India. The collection was presented to the Natural History Museum, London, UK, in 1952.
