Sir Bernard Lovell. View of Sir Bernard Lovell (1913-2012) in front of his telescope at Jodrell Bank, near Manchester, England. After a wartime career developing radar, he went on to study radio astronomy. In the beginning, he used war surplus radar equipment, but realised a larger, more accurate device was needed. In 1957, he commissioned the world's first giant dish radio telescope, the Mark 1. After improvements in 1970/71 it was designated the Mark 1A. The immense 76 metre dish is fully steerable, and it is still used for radio astronomy. An array of projects have utilised the facility, including identifying quasars and studying gravitational lenses.
