Artist's Description
Bear Claw Nebula. Optical image of the Bear Claw Nebula (NGC 6334). This is an emission nebula, a cloud of gas and dust that glows as the radiation from hot young stars within it ionises the hydro- gen gas it contains. This is a starbirth region. New stars form as the gas in the nebula coalesces under its own gravity. This nebula is 5500 light years from Earth in the constellation Scorpius.
