Artist's Description
Bayeux Tapestry Scene. King Harold at the Battle of Hastings, October 14th 1066 AD, receiving a fatal wound in the eye from an arrow. Photographed from a book published in 1821. The Bayeux Tapestry measures 70m long by 49.5cm high and shows scenes from the conquest of England by the Normans. The piece is actually an embroidery (of wool on canvas or linen) and was probably made in England (during 1073-1083 AD). Harold is wearing mail armour (chain mail), made by inter-linking many small, iron rings; padding was also worn underneath. The armour did not cover the face (to permit breathing and clear vision), nor the lower legs (to allow mobility).
