Artist's Description

Battle of Vienna. Illustration of the Battle of Vienna that took place on 11 and 12 September 1683. The forces of the Holy Roman Empire and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth broke the siege being carried out by forces of the invading Ottoman Empire. This was a crucial turning point in the battle for Christian Europe. The scene was depicted by Dutch artists such as Jacob Peeters and Romeyn de Hooghe, with the resulting artwork published by Nicolaes Visscher II (named at lower right). This copy of the artwork is from 'A collection of plans of fortifications and battles, 1684-1709' (1709) by Anna Beeck and Gaspar de Baillieu.
