Description
Galaxy M109. Optical image of the barred spiral galaxy Messier 109, or NGC 3992. This type SBc galaxy is seen tilted toward Earth, with a prominent central bar and well defined spiral arms. M109 lies about 40-50 million light years from Earth in the constellation Ursa Major. This image was made with the T2KA CCD camera on a 0.9- metre telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory, Arizona in January 1997.
