Description
Balloon 'Le Geant'. 19th-century illustration of the 'Le Geant' hot air balloon, designed in 1863 by French balloonist and photographer Nadar (Gaspard-Felix Tournachon, 1820-1910). Used by Nadar to take aerial photographs, it was known as 'Le Geant' (The Giant) for its huge size of 6000 cubic metres. The gondola had a balcony and was divided into six separate compartments, including a lavatory and a room for camera. On its second voyage, it flew from Paris to Germany. Artwork from 'Aerostation - Aviation' (1911) by French civil engineer Max de Nansouty (1854-1913), part of the 'Les merveilles de la science' series of 1867-1891 by Louis Figuier.
