Balloon engine and magneto. Historical illustration of a magneto (upper centre) used for ignition, here in a balloon engine used to power propellers. Known as an ignition magneto (see C023/5307), it provides pulses of high voltage for the engine spark plugs. This magneto design is from the Lavalette-Eiseman company. Artwork from 'Moteurs' (1911) by French civil engineer Max de Nansouty (1854-1913), part of the 'Les merveilles de la science' series of 1867-1891 by Louis Figuier.
