Artist's Description

Aztec map. Litigation map describing Oztoticpac land in Mexico in about 1540. The map was drawn up following the execution of the Aztec ruler Carlos Ometochtli Chichimecatecotl by Spanish officials on 30 November 1539. The map combines writing (in both Spanish and Nahuatl) and the glyphs (symbols and pictures of objects) used in Mesoamerica. The map is an inventory of the executed ruler's land, allowing it to be divided up among the claimants. At upper and lower right are maps of agricultural fields (almost 75 are shown). Several house plans are at upper left. At lower left are rare pictures of European fruit trees and vines grafted to native plants. The lands are in Texcoco, Mexico.
