Artist's Description
Gravity wave research. Cross-section of Auriga, an ultracryogenic gravitational wave detector under construction at Legnaro, Italy. The gravitational waves are detected by a 3m long cylindrical bar (not seen here) which will be placed in the cavity at centre within a series of concentric shells. The shells, which are suspended one within the other by titanium cables, shield the bar from external vibrations; the bar is also cooled to a temperature of 0.1 Kelvin to minimise its atomic vibrations. Auriga will be detecting gravitational waves from supernova explosions which are thought to cause vibrations in the bar with an amplitude of a billionth of a billionth of a metre.
