Artist's Description
Atmospheric pressure experiment. 19th-century illustration of an experiment demonstrating the effects of atmospheric pressure. A wooden ruler has been placed under a sheet of newspaper. When the ruler is hit fast, ensuring a seal is maintained between newspaper and table, the ruler breaks due to the air pressure downwards on the newspaper. This experiment relies on the additional area of the newspaper increasing the amount of air pressing down on the ruler. This illustration, part of a section titled 'Experiences de Physique sans Appareils' (illustrating popular physics experiments that don't require the use of laboratory equipment), is from 'Physique Populaire' (Emile Desbeaux, 1891).
