Artist's Description

An L-105 sustainer engine from a 1950s Atlas intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) on display at the Stafford Air and Space Museum in Weatherford, Oklahoma, USA. The Atlas was later used as a spacecraft launch vehicle. The early versions had three engines: the outer two acted as a first stage and were jettisoned, leaving the centre engine to sustain thrust, hence the term 'sustainer
