Artist's Description

Astronomical clock, Prague, Czech Republic. This was long thought to have been built in 1490, but it is now thought to date from 1410, though it has been added to over the years. This is the uppermost of two dials. It is astronomical and has three pointers showing the rotation of the Sun, Moon and stars. The inner symbols are zodiacal and the outer symbols mark a 24-hour clock. The lower calendrical dial (not seen) has an inner ring of zodiacal signs and an outer ring of signs for each month of the year. The clock is part of the Old Town Hall. It was very heavily damaged in the Second World War, but has since been restored to its original appearance.
