Assayer at work. Assaying is the analysis of metal ores to determine the proportions of their components. Pieces of the equipment are labelled. 2 are the scales used to weigh components. 3 are the cases for holding the weights. 4 are containers of acid solutions, such as aqua fortis (nitric acid) and aqua regis (mixture of nitric and hydrochloric acids), and quicksilver (mercury). Engraving taken from The Laws of Art and Nature, in Knowing, Judging, Assaying, Fining, Refining and Inlarging the Bodies of Confin'd Metals (1683) John Pettus, a translation of the work of Lazarus Erckern.
