Moon's phases and Earthshine. Artwork showing the phases of the Moon as it orbits around the Earth. In the new Moon phase (centre right) the Moon is between the Earth and the Sun and the lunar disc is therefore invisible. At top centre the Moon has done a quarter of its orbit around the Earth and half of the lunar disc is seen from Earth. In the full Moon phase (centre left) the Earth is between the Moon and the Sun and the whole lunar disc is visible. The earthshine effect occurs close to the new Moon phase when the sunlight reflected from the Earth towards the Moon (blue cones) enables the view of the obscured part of the lunar disc.
