Mars exploration. Artwork showing the space probe Mariner 9 approaching the planet Mars. It was launched on 30th May 1971 by an Atlas Centaurus rocket. Mariner 9, over a period of 349 days, collected 7329 images which enabled the mapping of most of the Martian surface. The majority of images have a spatial resolution of 1-2km and only a small fraction (2%) was taken at a higher resolution (100-300m). Mariner 9 took also detailed views of Deimos and Phobos, the two small satellites of Mars.
