Artist's Description

Edward Arthur Milne (1896-1950), British astrophysicist and mathematician, most commonly known as Arthur Milne. Milne worked on mathematical problems in astrophysics, and is best remembered for his model of an expanding universe, developed in the 1930s as an alternative to Einstein's Theory of General Relativity. He was awarded the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society (1935), the Royal Medal of the Royal Society (1941), and the Bruce Gold Medal of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific (1945). He was President of the Royal Astronomical Society from 1943 to 1945. A crater on the Moon is named in his honour.
