Description
Artery stenosis. Coloured angiogram (X-ray) of stenosis (narrowing, for instance at upper right) of the popliteal arteries (red) in the legs. Arterial stenosis can be due to atherosclerosis, the build-up of fatty material on an artery's inner wall, or thrombosis, the formation of a clot in an undamaged artery. It can also result from an embolism, which occurs when a particle or gas bubble that was moving through the artery becomes trapped. The decreased blood flow may produce pain in the area normally supplied with blood by the affected artery. The increased blood pressure that results also puts extra strain on the heart.
