Lucy and Australopithecus afarensis. Artwork of the Lucy skeleton and an Australopithecus afarensis settlement. The Lucy skeleton was part of a rich find of fossils made in the Afar region of Ethiopia between 1973 & 1977. She dates back from 3.3 million years ago and is widely accepted as one of the earliest links in the human record. Lucy was an Australopithecus afarensis, one of the oldest known hominids. They inhabited the Earth between 3.7 and 1.6 million years ago. In the settlement (background) males can be seen sharpen- ing spears, making tools, and gathering food. A female can be seen breast-feeding a baby.
