Artist's Description

Aristotle, Ancient Greek philosopher. Woodcut from Munster's 1544 edition of the 'Cosmographia', one of the earliest European portraits after antiquity. Aristotle (384 BC-322 BC) was an Athenian philosopher and founder of logic. He studied under Plato as an orphan, and after Plato's death returned to Macedon to become tutor to the young Alexander the Great. A first class naturalist, he was fascinated by the task of classifying animal species and arranging them in hierarchies. His teachings on logic provided the philosophical basis of science for 1800 years.
