Description
Arene combustion. Arenes (aromatic hydrocarbon compounds such as benzene or naphthalene) burn with a smoky flame. Other names for arenes include aryl hydrocarbons and aromatic hydrocarbons. When burnt in air they react with the oxygen to produce a sooty yellow flame. This is due to their high carbon-hydrogen ratio.
