Artist's Description

Apple crop research. Fruit from Malus sieversii trees grown by the United States Agricultural Research Service (ARS) in Geneva, New York, as part of research into disease resistance. Malus sieversii is a wild apple tree native to the mountains of central Asia and is thought to be one of 3 ancestors of the modern domestic apple (Malus domestica). It contains a treasure trove of genes they may be useful for improving the disease resistance of American domestic apples.
