Artist's Description

Apollo 17 lunar module Challenger's ascent stage in lunar orbit. Apollo 17 was the sixth and final Apollo manned landing on the Moon. The mission launched on the 7th of December 1972 with astronauts Eugene Cernan, Harrison Schmitt and Ronald Evans aboard. Cernan and Schmitt used Challenger to land in the Moon's Taurus Littrow region, whilst Evans remained in orbit. The crew spent more than three days on the surface, travelling a total distance of 35 kilometres (km) and ranging up to 7.8 km from the landing site. They set up scientific experiments, and collected 110 kilogrammes of lunar rocks and soil. The crew landed back on Earth on 19 December 1972.
