Apollo 15 splashdown. Apollo 15 spacecraft command module (Endeavor) splashing down in the Pacific Ocean at 20:45 Universal Time on 7 August 1971, some 530 kilometres north of Honolulu, Hawaii. It carried NASA astronauts David R. Scott, Alfred M. Worden and James B. Irwin safely back to Earth following their mission to the Moon (26 July to 7 August 1971). Only two of the three parachutes (one seen at top left) functioned correctly, resulting in a descent velocity of 35 kilometres per hour. The command module is cone-shaped with a base diameter of 3.9 metres. It is now on display at the United States Air Force Museum, Dayton, Ohio, USA.
