Apollo 11 launch (second of 2 images). Apollo 11 separates from the first stage of its Saturn V rocket during the first manned mission to land on the Moon. The first stage's five engines delivered 3.5 million kilogrammes of thrust at take-off. The first stage fired for 2.5 minutes, lifting the spacecraft to an altitude of 60 kilometres and a distance downrange from the launch site of 88 kilometres. After the first stage separated, two other rocket stages continued the journey. Astronauts Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Edwin Aldrin were launched in Apollo 11 on 16 July 1969. Armstrong and Aldrin landed on the Moon on 20 July 1969. (See also S375/067).
