Artist's Description
Apollo 11 lunar surface panorama, 1969. NASA's Apollo 11 mission to the Moon took place from 16-24 July 1969. This mission was the first landing by humans on the Moon, with Neil Armstrong and Edwin 'Buzz' Aldrin descending to the surface in the Lunar Module, while Michael Collins remained in orbit in the Command Module. Armstrong and Aldrin spent just over 21 hours on the lunar surface, including over 2 hours outside their spacecraft on 21 July 1969. While exploring the area near their Lunar Module LM-5 Eagle (top left) at Tranquility Base, they conducted experiments, collected lunar rock samples, and took photographs. This panorama (combining 8 photographs) is on the rim of Little West Crater at camera station 5. The crater is at right, with the photographer's shadow at far left.
