Artist's Description
Apollo 11 landing site imaged from 24 kilometres above the lunar surface by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) spacecraft. Just left of centre are the remains of the lunar module (LM) that carried US astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin to and from the surface of the moon. Around the lunar module are the remnants of scientific experiments set up on the surface, and the dark tracks that show the astronauts' movements. Left on the Moon were the Laser Ranging RetroReflector (LRRR), which is still collecting measurements, and the Passive Seismic Experiment Package (PSEP). The LRO was launched on 18th June 2009 and entered lunar orbit on 23rd June 2009.
