Description
Antibiotic effect on bacteria. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of the bacterium Escherichia coli, treated with antibiotic. The cells show extensive blebbing, formation of bubbly protrusions. These protrusions are due to the action of the antibiotic drug. Both penicillin and streptomycin have this effect. The drug affects the bacterial cell wall, deforming the cell shape before the wall finally breaks, killing the bacterium. E. coli occurs naturally in the human intestine. Some strains may cause gastro-enteritis and urinary tract infections. Magnification: x8500 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
