Description
False-colour bubble chamber photograph showing the annihilation of matter & antimatter. An antiproton (pale blue) enters from below & meets a proton in the liquid hydrogen filling the chamber. Proton & antiproton annihilate, their energy rematerialis- ing as 4 positive pions (red) & 4 negative pions (green). The negative pions curve clockwise, the positive pions anticlockwise in the chamber's mag- netic field. The two lower pions have less energy than the others the green one travels a short distance & stops when captured by a proton; the red one decays into a muon (yellow) & an invisible neutrino. Background tracks are dark blue.
