Anglo-Saxon lead book cover, 19th-century artwork. The title is in runic characters. The inscription in Anglo-Saxon Latin starts: 'I, Aelfric, monk and mass-priest, was sent in King Aethelred's time from Aelfheah the bishop, the successor of Aethelwold, to a certain minister called Cerne.' This is the start of the Anglo-Saxon homilies by Aelfric of Eynsham (c.955-c.1010). The book cover was found in the grounds of the abbey at Bury St Edmond's, Suffolk, UK. This artwork, for a paper by British antiquarian Thomas Wright (1810-1877), was published in Volume 34, Issue 2 (1852) of 'Archaeologia', the journal of the Society of Antiquaries of London.
