Artist's Description
Angelo Celli (1857-1914), Italian physician, microbiologist and parasitologist. Celli gained his medical degree from the Sapienza University of Rome in 1878. Most of his career was spent at this university. He also founded the the Pasteur Institute at Palermo in 1887. His most famous research was on malaria. Together with Ettore Marchiafava, he described the protozoan parasite that caused this disease, naming the parasite Plasmodium in 1885. Celli also work on public health, establishing schools to educate the peasant population in Italian wetlands to help them prevent malaria.
