Artist's Description

Analogue robot. Roswell, a non-digital (analogue) robot peering over a fence. This robot is about 1.8 metres tall and has 16 different sensors to help it process and traverse its environment. It was built by the Canadian roboticist Mark Tilden who invented its control device, the nervous net. This robot works by generating a dynamic system of interactions between itself and the outside world. It has no pre-programming, but solves problems by reaching an equilibrium with its environment. Its structure allows its circuits to retain electrical charge, giving it a form of memory which enhances its competence. Tilden works at Los Alamos National Laboratory, USA. Photographed in 1999.
