Artist's Description
Robot insect being built. Canadian roboticist Mark Tilden in the process of building Nito, a non-digital (analogue) bipedal robot insect. He is constructing this robot from standard sensors, motors and LEDs. Much of what he is using is from domestic electrical equipment. Nito, like all analogue robots, will have no pre-programming. It will negotiate problems by trying to reach an equilibrium with its environment. Tilden hopes this inexpensive robot will walk bipedally, a goal not yet properly achieved by any robot. It is hoped Nito could have applications such as land mine clearance. Tilden works at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, USA. Photographed in 1999.
