Amphetamine. Computer artwork of a molecule of amphetamine (chemical formula: C9.H13.N), a drug with stimulant and appetite-depressant properties. Also known as beta-aminopropylbenzene. Atoms are depicted as spheres and are colour-coded: carbon (green), hydrogen (yellow), nitrogen (pink). This drug is a powerful vasoconstrictor, and a central nervous system stimulant. It was once used in the management of depression and obesity. However, since the 1960's amphetamine (in its powdered sulphate form) has been abused as a stimulant, taken by sniffing or injection. It has addictive properties and may cause psychotic states.
