Artist's Description
Americas phytoplankton levels, 1997-2007. Globe map using satellite data, showing average chlorophyll levels in the oceans around the Americas during the period from 1997 to 2007. The ocean colours show concentration of chlorophyll (due to phytoplankton blooms) in milligrams per cubic metre, from low levels (dark blue, 0.01) through light blue, green, yellow, orange and red to high levels (brown-grey, 10). Land is greyed out. The chlorophyll data was obtained by the Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view-Sensor (SeaWiFS) on the OrbView-2 spacecraft. This sensor operated for 13 years from September 1997 to December 2010.
