Artist's Description

Amazon River, Brazil, satellite image. North is at top. The Amazon River is the largest river in the world by volume of water drained. Numerous tributaries (seen here) drain water through thousands of kilometres of dense rainforest (green) to the Atlantic Ocean (top right). Near the sea, the river becomes so wide that it is not possible to see from one side to the other. At the sea, the river deposits large amounts of sediments and turns the coastal waters to fresh water for many kilometres out to sea. The swirling sediments are seen as light blue areas. Image data obtained on 15 July 1986.
