Light micrograph (yellow cast) of a section of the brain of a person affected by Alzheimer's disease, showing the presence of neurofibrillary tangles, which together with senile plaques are characteristic features of the disease. In this section stained with Gomori's methenamine silver, a tangle is visible as the elongated dark object at left. Neurofibrillary tangles are masses of dark filaments present in cytoplasm of neurones; they are composed of twisted pairs of filaments probably derived from the nerve cell's microtubular system. Magnification: X 210 at 35mm size.
