Description
Science and technology figure prominently in the reliefs found on Giotto's Campanile in Florence. Astronomy, navigation, mathematics, medicine, the arts of building and weaving are depicted allegorically with the personification ot their mythical inventors. They also offer a glimpse of contemporary life in 14th century Florence. This relief depicts a typical consulting room in the Middle Ages with with the doctor making a uroscopic examination, against the light, of a urine sample in a matula. Several women patients wait to give the doctor a matula, which is a transparent glass vessel enclosed in a straw casing with a lid and handle.
