Artist's Description
Alchemical symbols. 18th-century illustration of alchemical symbols and text from 'Compendium Alchymist Novum' (1706). This page, titled 'Trium Principiorum Generatio', includes a double-headed imperial eagle. The title of the book translates as 'New Alchemists' Compendium'. The book compared the power of the new chemical science being discovered at the time, to the Greek myth of Pandora's box, where evil was let loose into the world, along with hope. The book was written by German physician Johann Michael Faust (1663-1707).
