Artist's Description

Albert Tissandier (1839-1905), French architect, aviator, illustrator, editor and archaeologist. Tissandier was an extensive contributor and editor of the weekly scientific magazine 'La Nature', founded in 1873 by his brother Gaston. Like his brother, he also escaped the Siege of Paris by balloon in 1870. Together, they demonstrated electric flight by fitting an electric engine to an airship. Albert visited numerous countries worldwide to make archaeological illustrations. Artwork from 'Aerostation - Aviation' (1911) by French civil engineer Max de Nansouty (1854-1913), part of the 'Les merveilles de la science' series of 1867-1891 by Louis Figuier.
