Artist's Description
Flying into a storm. A heavily-modified T-28 trainer aircraft, used to study conditions inside thunderstorms. The aircraft has very extensively strengthened wings and fuselage to cope with the very violent turbulence inside a cumulonimbus thundercloud. Inside such a cloud there is freezing rain or hail, vertical wind shears of up to 100 km/h, lightning and zero visibility for a pilot. As a consequence, as much data as possible is collected from each flight - a variety of instrumented pods are mounted under the wings. The aircraft is operated by the National Weather Service in the USA.
