Artist's Description
The path of the Large Electron-Positron collider (LEP) at CERN, the European particle physics laboratory, is marked by the large circle on this picture of the countryside north of Geneva. Scheduled to start operations in 1989, LEP will accelerate electrons & positrons to an energy of 50 GeV. It is housed in a tunnel 100m underground & 27km in circumference. The smaller circle marks the tunnel of CERN's existing proton-antiproton collider, the SPS, with the main CERN site to its left. The France-Switzerland border bissects the site & Geneva airport is seen in the foreground.
