Description
Adenovirus Ad5. Computer illustration showing the external protein structure of adenovirus 5 (Ad5) particles (virions). Adenoviruses are the largest viruses not to have a protein coat covering their capsid. The capsid is icosahedral, having 20 triangular faces made up of regular arrangements of hexon capsomeres (yellow). Penton capsomeres (pink) make up the 12 vertices, with a fibre and knob structure protruding from each. Cement proteins are cyan. Inside the capsid is the genetic material (DNA, not shown). Adenoviruses commonly cause infections of the upper respiratory tract and eyes. Adenoviruses are popular vectors for gene therapy.
