Abell 2597 galaxy cluster, ALMA shadow. Combined optical and millimetre image of the Abell 2597 galaxy cluster, showing the shadow (black area in inset) caused by cold clouds of molecular gas falling into the supermassive black hole at the centre of the cluster (see images C030/0223 and C030/0224). The background (blue) is from the Hubble Space Telescope. The foreground (red) is from the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) in Chile. The ALMA data showing the distribution of carbon monoxide gas in and around the galaxy cluster. This object is also known as Abell 2597 Brightest Cluster Galaxy. It is about a billion light years from Earth in the constellation of Aquarius. Image released in June 2016.
