Description
A specimen of quartz, an oxide of the nonmetallic element silicon, from a mine in Cornwall, England. Quartz is one of the commonest minerals found on the earth and appears in a variety of forms. It is an important mineral in industry because of its piezoelectric properties. It is also used in large quantities in the manufacture of paints, glass, abrasives, refractories and percision instruments. The prettier specimens are used as semi-precious gems.
