Mount Etna volcano erupting. Television crew filming an ash eruption on Mount Etna in October 2002. The eruption column has a classic cauliflower-shaped appearance. Ash is formed of small fragments of pyroclastic material, such as volcanic glass and rock. It can be carried many kilometres on the wind. Mount Etna rises 3323 metres from the Italian island of Sicily, and is the largest active volcano in Europe.
